"I violate no secret when I say that one of the greatest values in Masonry is that it affords an opportunity for men of all walks of life to meet on a common ground where all men are equal and have one common interest".

- Brother Theodore Roosevelt

The Trowel

...is an instrument made use of by operative masons to spread the cement which unites the building into one common mass: but we, as Free and Accepted Masons, are taught to make use of it for the more and noble and glorius purpose of spreading the cement of Brotherly love and affection - that cement which unites us into one sacred band, or society of friends and Brothers, among whom no contention should ever exist, but that noble contention, or rather emulation, of who best can work and best agree.

What Is A Mason?

A Freemason is a man who, in searching for life's ineffable questions, finds his way into the company of fellow seekers. Comprised of men from every nation, races, social and economic level, all hold similar ideals and beliefs. The uniting idea is a faith in the divine founded in the certitude in an afterlife. This "belief" is grounded by certain landmark tenants and virtues which ultimately lead in exploration of those invisible questions, leading ultimately to the betterment of all mankind.

From the Scholarship Committee

To All this Concerns,

Lombard Lodge No. 1098, A.F. & A.M., located at 26 W. Central Blvd, Villa Park, Illinois 60181, will be awarding scholarships to a number of high school seniors who will graduate this academic year from a public high school within the State of Illinois. The exact dollar amount of each scholarship will depend upon the size of investment income and donations to the Lombard Lodge Scholarship Fund. Several scholarships ranging from $500 to $1000 each have been paid out to eligible students each year.

The scholarships are designed to assist graduating seniors in pursuing a post-secondary education in any state at an accredited institution which provides a two- or four-year college program. The scholarships may be used for any bona fide school related expense such as tuition, fees, and books.

Applicants need not have a Masonic connection, nor does race, creed, religion, color, sex, or national origin have any bearing in the selection process. Recipients are selected after completing a comprehensive written application and an in-depth personal interview.

A broad-based criterion is used in the selection process. The principal criterion is service to school and community with special emphasis upon leadership roles in these areas. Lombard Lodge No. 1098, A.F. & A.M. is looking for those students who exhibit the greatest potential to be not only of service to their communities in the future but also leaders in these communities. An applicant's academic record, communication skills, and need for financial assistance are also carefully considered as is an evaluation of the applicant by a school official. The organization, appearance, and completeness of the application are also factors considered by the Scholarship Committee.

From all the applications received, the Scholarship Committee will select a number of finalists who will be asked to appear before the committee for a personal interview. These interviews will be conducted at Villa Park Masonic Temple, 26 W. Central Blvd,

Villa Park, Illinois 60181. Upon completion of the interviews, the committee will then select those who will receive scholarships.

Public high school seniors who feel they meet the criteria for eligibility and selection are invited to submit applications. These applications may be obtained through the guidance department of participating public high schools and must be returned to the Lombard Lodge Scholarship Committee with a postmark no later than that of April 1st, 2012

From the Secretary

Hello Brethren,

Happy New Year to all. Yesterday, the day of our January Stated meeting, it was 50 something degrees and I was in my tee shirt outside for a while.  Today it is cold and snowing for all it is worth.  Change happens quickly.  I look at Lombard Lodge today and am amazed at how much it has changed since I first sat in line some 14 years ago.  The Lodge keeps changing.  And it seems to keep getting better.  Let’s thank all the Officers and members that are working so hard to make that happen.

Worshipful Master Dave Jones has the Lombard Lodge ship sailing at full throttle.  We have a lot of fun events coming up.  These include bowling, dancing, dining, smoking, awarding, visiting, and even curling.  We are also doing an ILCHP event.  SW Brad Gerace is keeping us on our toes.  We might be going for not only the Award of Excellence, but the Golden Trowel Award as well.  It is possible!

We have been lucky with getting some young ritual wizards in our Lodge too.  I think Worshipful Brother Omar Ali broke a record for passing the Grand Lecturer exam in such a short time.  Brother Scott Rath has already done a great job doing the Chaplains work at a Masonic Service.

However, there is a lot of unfinished work.  We have 14 candidates including 2 that should be invited to petition. We have our work cut out for us. In addition, we unfortunately still have about 50 members that have not paid their dues. Hey, please give me a call if you are not making ends meet. We know it is a tough time for many. We will discreetly aid and assist.  Also, let us know if you can use some help with anything you need because of a handicap or hardship.  We have access to funds for that purpose. We are here for you Brother.

Members of Lombard Lodge have begun to report on jobs available at their place of employment as well.  We are hoping to help people out of work.  WM Dave Jones is keeping a record of openings.  If we all pull together maybe we can do a small part in helping to turn the economy around.

Please remember Brother Leroy Felgenhauer who passed away December 30, 2011.

In closing, I am looking forward to an exciting Super Bowl.  I am sure some of you are hoping to get to wear that distinguished cheese hat again.  I wonder if the Masters in Green Bay wear that while in the East?  Well, either way I am predicting an upset.

See you all at the bowling alley - Or at the next meeting!

Rick Lingenfelser, WPM
Secretary
Lombard Lodge No. 1098 A.F. & A.M.

From the Senior Deacon

Brethren,

The 2nd degree slate is almost filled. For those of you who responded, many thanks. So far we have one confirmed Candidate for the second degree on Wed. January 18th, 2012 at Villa Park Lodge at 7:00pm.

In addition (and pending the positive results of their investigation), we are planning a 1st degree for one, possibly two Candidates on Wednesday, January 25th, 2012. That is Wed. Jan 25th 2012 at Villa Park Lodge at 7:00pm.

Fraternally,

Bro. Jim Pankiewicz, SD

An Appeal to Brothers for a Final Resting Place

Cemetery Plots Available - Lombard Lodge No. 1098 has 12 cemetery lots available for members. We have gotten a couple of inquires about the lots and decided at the annual meeting that the new Worshipful Master will have this on his agenda. We need to determine how we will distribute these lots to those that wish to acquire them. They are located at three cemeteries: Cedar Park in Chicago, Chapel Hill Gardens-West in Elmhurst, and Mount Emblem in Elmhurst. Contact the Secretary or Worshipful Master if you are interested. These lots may also be available for sale.  Some of them are beautiful and worth up to $1,500. Email the Secretary

The Masonic Service Association of North America (MSANA) was formed in 1919 to provide services to its member Grand Lodges that they would find difficult to provide for themselves. Thus the national voice that the MSA has is dedicated to Service to the Masonic community.

The primary functions and activities of the MSANA are:

  • Disaster Relief - since 1923 the MSA has collected and forwarded funds for disasters around the world.

  • Masonic Information Center - to provide information on Freemasonry to Masons and non-Masons alike and to respond to critics of Freemasonry.

  • Service - The Masonic Service Association of North America is a servant of Freemasonry. Formed of and supported by Grand Lodges, it is a voice that they can move to action, that the great heart of the Fraternity be made manifest and that the will of a united Craft may be done.
